Are you feeding your pet the right food?

Posted July 28th, 2010 by stucker

Our pets are unlike us in that they eat the same thing day in and day out.  When you examine this fact, it seems quite apparent that the cat food or dog food we’re feeding out pets is either helping them live a long, healthy life or or making them very un-healthy.

Like many pet owners, we thought that giving our cats a certain premium brand of food was doing the best thing for their health.   After all, it was one of the highest priced pet foods on the market so it had to be the best, right?

Wrong!

The reality is, cost is only one small indication of quality.  In fact, some of the most nutritious pet food is extremely low in cost.   To find out if the food that you are feeding your pets is actually good for them, you have to understand which ingredients are nutritious and which ingredients are just ‘fillers’, or, as I refer to them – junk!

So go and get a bag of the pet food you’re presently giving to your pet and compare and contrast it with this list of what is good for your pet and what is not:

  • Protein: the primary source should come from quality animal protein, not a vegetable or grain.  Are there animal by-products used in the formula? If so, they may be inferior sources of protein and difficult to digest.
  • Grains: grains like soy, corn, corn gluten and wheat gluten may be difficult to digest and can also cause allergies.   Rice has the tendency to be the most digestible, least allergy-inducing grain.
  • Fats: Animal, not vegetable, fats tend to be the simplest for your pets to metabolize and absorb.
  • Health-promoting ingredients: Vegetables, fiber, probiotics and minerals are all important ingredients that help keep your pet healthy and strong. Does your current brand of pet food contain any of them?

If your pet is experiencing any health issues – from loss of energy and vitality, to respiratory issues, to joint aches and pains or any other symptoms – DO NOT disregard the possibility that it may be caused by his food.   Just like an adjustment to your diet can improve your health, so can an adjustment to your pet’s food! But please don’t take my word for it…do your own research, educate yourself and try out different products (we use Life’s Abundance which has certainly  helped our pets look and feel great).

The main thing is, your pet can’t go to the supermarket or pet store to buy his own food…he counts on you! Allow your pet to live his or her best life by picking out the right food and you’ll both be so much richer for it!

Basics of Raising Chickens: Part Two

Posted July 28th, 2010 by stucker

Welcome to Part Two of our series on the Basics of Raising Chickens. When you are trying to learn how to raise chickens, you need as much information as possible. In this section, we look at watering your birds as well as protecting them from predators.

Unlike most other animals, a chicken has virtually no defenses other than running away. This makes them easy prey for other animals. The good news is you can provide protection via your chicken coop, hen house, or chicken run.

When you look for plans for chicken coops, take a moment to consider how the plan is designed for protecting your animals. For instance, you want to purchase chicken coop plans or hen house plans that have instructions on how to install wire over the windows, vents, and other entry ways. You want plans that allow for some kind of flooring. Having your birds on the ground, in the dirt, that is, is dangerous as many predators can easily get to them. Dirt floors are also hard to keep clean and can lead to outbreaks of disease.

If at all possible, you want your chicken coop to be off the ground. This is the best way to keep unhealthy bugs, rodents, and other predators out of the coop or hen house. It is also the best preventive measure for keeping the floor dry during wet weather

If you chicken coop is built more than 18 inches above ground level, make sure you add a wooden ramp so the birds can enter and exit without harming themselves.

The next important issue you have to address is one that can make or break your efforts. It has to do with water.

Chicken coops, hen houses, and chicken runs all need some form of delivering clean, fresh water to your birds. It has been estimated that as many birds die from lack of water as from all other threats combined. This is especially true in hot weather.

There is no set amount of water per bird. Chickens will drink when they get thirsty provided they have access to clean water. It is vitally important that you provide enough watering points for the number of birds you have. You should know that chickens will often refuse to drink water that is filthy or has droppings in it. They will also refuse to drink water that is either too cold or too hot.

Many quality chicken coop plans will contain important information on how to set up watering points to accommodate the number of birds you plan to house. Do not underestimate the importance of watering your animals properly.

As you can see, many of the potential problems associated with raising chickens can be prevented by simply being prepared. Give your chickens the right type of feed, as determined by their age and purpose, provide them with fresh water, and build them a chicken coop that is safe and secure and many of your worries will be gone. If you run into anything you do not understand, look into one of the many online forums dedicated to this hobby. You will be surprised at how many people will help you as you try to learn how to raise chickens that are healthy and wholesome.

Amazing Chinchilla Tricks

Posted July 28th, 2010 by stucker

Chinchillas are playful in nature and lovable pets because of their furry skin. Aside from these personalities, Chinchillas are also loved by people because of their ability to perform amazing and numerous tricks. Chinchillas are very intelligent and clever creatures which subject them to perform amazing Chinchilla tricks that can wow any individual.

Teaching your pet Chinchilla a Chinchilla trick is not that easy. It requires you to have lots of patience and you need to win their trusts first. Once you lose their trust, it will take a lot of time for them to give it back again. Chinchillas have very good memories. They can easily remember a person or a thing that scared them or frightened them. The next time they encounter that person or anything that caused them such emotion, they reject it.

Most of the pet owners really don’t have any plan in training their pets. Some train their pet Chin only for fun and entertainment. When you are training your pet Chin, never raise your voice to let them do Chinchilla tricks. These pets can easily get frightened. You can only raise your voice if it’s necessary for training purposes. Like if you don’t want them to go and bite your electrical wiring then train them on how to do that. But before you train them for that, make sure that you already gained their trust for it to be effective.

Common and first Chinchilla tricks that you can teach your pet Chin, is teaching them how to chew out of a hand. You can start putting a treat in your palm and the Chin should step in your palm to get the treat. Owners should be patience in doing this because you pet Chin may not trust you at first. After you have gained the trust of your pet Chin and have done this trick, try moving it on your forearm, this is teaching your pet to climb in your forearm in getting a treat.

Also, train them to get used to being seized and handled by their owners. Train them to get used to being held, allowing your pet to crawl all over your arms. These pets will learn the tricks like sitting on command like your dogs; they have their own unique way to do certain Chinchilla tricks that amazes people. These lovely creatures love to jump over obstacles and run around their cages. These are just some of their entertaining Chinchilla tricks that made people want to keep them as pets.

Find The Perfect Dog Leash For Your Dog

Posted July 28th, 2010 by stucker

Many pet owners enjoy a stroll through the neighbourhood with their pooch and as most municipalities require your pooch to be on a leash it is one of the first purchases to make when you get a dog. Your breeder or Veterinarian may have talked to you about a training lead for your dog; your friends and family may have mentioned a leather leash or nylon leash. With so many choices, it can be confusing on which type of dog leash you should have.

The standard leash

It comes in leather or nylon. These leashes are the most common and therefore can offer a lot to style and decoration from diamond studded to Coach® leather. Nylon leashes can have a reflective strip for safety when walking at night or early morning. These dog leashes come in a six-foot length, which is what most municipalities require. The standard leash is the dog lead of choice when it comes to dog leash training.

Standard leashes offer diversity in not only textures, colors, but also come in single or double leash style. When you begin dog leash training for the first time with your four-legged family member it is best to start with only one dog. Leash training requires both hands on the leash; one through the looped end and the other about half way down the lead. This helps you keep the right placement of the dog-training collar on your dog’s neck, which should be just below the ears and not half way down your dog’s neck. Incorrect collar placement can cause serious damage to your pooch, especially during the first stages of dog leash training.

A bicycle dog leash

It is a specialty lead designed for those owners who enjoy taking their pooch along for a daily ride. The leash is an aluminum tube with a plastic coated cable running down through the tube, which extends out of the tube end a couple of feet to allow for ease of movement for your dog. One end connects to the bike while the other to your dog’s collar keeping them safely away the bike.
Retractable dog leashes

This type of dog leash have become quite popular over the last few years. From a training standpoint, these leashes offer no help and are not a good choice during dog leash training lessons. They are however; wonderful for those dogs that are already leash trained and have successfully learned the “come” and “heel” commands. When you are in an open area your dog can have the freedom to explore while still safely attached to a leash should anything unexpected happen.

Martingale leash

Sometimes this leash is referred to as a “show-leash” as it is the dog leash of choice by show dog handlers while in the ring. They are an all-in-one collar and leash, offering the benefit of a choke collar without the possibility of choking and a leash for walking or jogging. The collar portion of the lead rides high on your dog’s neck, just behind the ears connected with a small chain that pulls tight when you pull on the leash but stops short of actually choking. A great choice for the jogger in the family who likes the security of having the dog along in the run.

As you can see from the choices and their functions, dog leashes play an important role in your dog’s life. Your collection should at least include two; one for walking and leash training and the other for teaching basic obedience dog training. Having multiple dog leashes to fit your individual life style is up each pet owner and no matter what your plans are from training to jogging there is a dog leash to accomplish the task.

For a few years, we considered owning a few chickens, however we couldn’t find the time to construct a coop, so we always scheduled it later. A couple of years in the past, after our business had grown and things were going easily, we at long last found time to build a chicken coop and get some chickens. There’s nothing our children love more than waking up every morning to go out and pick up all of the eggs of the chickens. Of course, when you plan on harvesting the eggs for food, you must keep the roosters separated from the eggs. If not, it’s possible you’ll break the egg then find a gruesome surprise. As we were looking through a number of housing plans, we came across numerous chicken house plans. Are you interested in studying the various designs? Then continue reading this text, since that’s precisely what we will be telling you about.

If you may have ever looked into building a house, in that case you by now understand that the designs are tougher than they might look. It’s just like building a smaller home and needs the same form of planning and work. You may have decided to stroll away from looking for designs you can build on your own. It may be easier simply to get yourself an entire do it yourself kit that may include complete instructions and supplies needed.

Before you use so much cash on that package, you should keep in mind that it is still going to require some work on your part. Have you ever thought about the coop designs which are online? These are nice for people that like the idea of constructing the complete bird house on their own. When checking out the plans, there are ones that include ventilation, perches, lighting, a run and much more.

If you may have decided to put some extra work into the process and build your own, then you will see that you’ll save money. Most of the kits you buy will cost more for the supplies that you buy.

It is always best to discover a plan after which purchase the supplies yourself. Some make the most of the kits and charge far more than they’re worth.

With a plan, if you have a few nails, a hammer and you reside close to a wood store where you could buy the supplies you do not have round your own home, you will not have any problems. Look online and you may easily discover numerous designs available.

When we were building ours, we discovered a website that was full of them. Actually, there were so many to select from that we became confused, because there were so many that we really liked.

By the end of it all, we actually ended up using two plans and presently, we’re engaged on our third plan. Yes, we have a number of chickens that are nicely taken cared of.

Ultimately, by doing a fast search for chicken house plans, you’ll come across many. The plan for your chicken coop would also be dependent on the number of chickens you have, you must be aware of this when searching for one of the best design.

At Chicken House Designs, you will find products, information, and resources about pigeon coops designs, poultry coop plans, and chicken houses and runs.

American Foxhound – A Versatile Dog Breed

Posted July 25th, 2010 by stucker

The striking conformation of an American Foxhound bears a striking resemblance to the body build of a Beagle. An American Foxhound’s height is between 21 and 25 inches and the weight ranges from 65 to 75 pounds. The streamlined athletic body is thickly covered with a short fur that ranges in color from tan and white, red and white and the impressive combination of black, tan and white. The admirable speed of this excellent hunter is attributed to the well boned strong legs.

The American Foxhound is a very old breed – older than America, the country it was named after. The American Foxhound breedhave evolved from the hunting dogs brought by Robert Brooke to the Crown Colony in 1650.

These excellent hunting dogs were highly valued in their country of origin. These dogs are favorite hunting companions of the British landed gentry. In a fox hunt, hunters on horseback follow packs of American Foxhounds. The deep and booming melodious voice will distinctly change to alert the hunters when a prey is found. The dogs are used by the settlers of the Crown colony to hunt foxes as well. Because of the ferocious nature, the dogs are believed to have been used by the English military commanders to track Indians.

The crossing between English Hounds and the dogs of Irish and French settlers resulted to the development of a new breed – the American Foxhound. This has resulted to the development of the American Foxhound.

The American Foxhound, first and foremost is a hunting dog. An American Foxhound would be in its element if it is chasing a prey. An ultra sensitive scenting ability, a remarkable staying power and a passionate desire to overpower a prey make this breed a notable hunter. An American Foxhound is an intense hunter, once a prey is sighted, the dog will not stop until the animal is taken. As the breed name suggests, foxes are the usual prey of these dogs although these hunting dogs will not pass up the chance to run after any animal. It is not surprising if this breed is on the top list most valued hunting dogs.

American Foxhounds are acclaimed for their intense hunting drives. These courageous hunters though have a sweet and loving personality. Highly energetic while hunting, this dog turns into a calm, gentle and sweet family companion. An American Foxhound gives its loyalty and friendship not only to one person. This breed that loves the whole family is particularly affectionate and gentle with children.

Effective Ferret Care

Posted July 24th, 2010 by stucker

What your new ferret needs is someone that will take good care of him and love him. You need to understand the right way of ferret care that you can give your new friend ferret. You can show this by providing your ferret a very nice and comfortable home with a comfortable bed to sleep in. Providing them with hammock can be your best choice when it comes to sleeping material. Ferrets just have this so much love for hammocks. It provides them the perfect comfort and spot for hiding and sleeping. Ferrets love to hide and take a nap. They are hyperactive creature and very playful, and so, after playing they also get tired and want to rest. They normally sleep 18-20 hours a day. They really need these hours of sleep to regain the energy that they have lost.

Ferret care also includes providing them with proper diet and grooming. Their diet is a meat-based diet. Ferret gets all the nutrition they need through meat-based diet. Avoid feeding them food that contains high fibre. Their body was not designed to digest fibres. This will result to soft and wet mucous bowel movement. Wrong diet will also lead to health problems and can shorten their life span. Proper diet means healthy ferret and happy ferret.

Grooming is also important in ferret care. Of course, most of us want that our pet ferret looks neat and well-groomed. This is possible if we are keen enough to groom our ferret. Wash them using ferret shampoo and soap, if these are not available, you can use cat products but never use dog products. Check for ear mite when you’re grooming them. Ear mites can affect their health. Also check for their nails and trim them occasionally. At least every two weeks. Clean your ferret’s materials like their food and water dishes, house, and beddings.

Playing with them is also part of ferret care. You need to interact with your pet ferret to build relationship and gain his trust. If your pet ferret trust you, then it would be easier to tame and discipline them. Ferrets really love to play. They are known to be hyperactive and playful creatures. Make sure that when you play with them no one gets hurt. Ferret has thicker skin as compared to ours. So they may think that you’re just the same with them and they are not aware of the force that they apply when playing. If this happens, just look at them in the eye and say NO! To let them know that what they’re doing is wrong. But technically, your ferret has really no intention of hurting you.

These are the few tips that you need to understand in ferret care. If we understand the nature and behaviour of our ferret pet, we can provide them the proper care that they need.

Barking Collars

Posted July 24th, 2010 by stucker

I enjoy my puppy.  I enjoy the faithful affection that my mottled mutt shows me each and every time I step with the door.  I really like the way he joyously runs to play fetch with me.  I really enjoy walking him all more than the neighborhood even though we delight in each and every other’s organization.  I really like my canine almost as significantly as I love my own loved ones.  I even really like old Snoopy in excess of some of my relatives.

As a matter of fact, the only matter which i really enjoy a lot more than my puppy is my sleep.  The unfortunate reality is the fact that often they clash.  My canine is rather a barker.  Even with most with the barking collars that I have tried, it’s challenging to get him to shut up.  When the postman comes by, he barks.  If a auto, truck, bicycle, or motorcycle drives by, he barks.  When I primary obtained him, I was hesitant to have a bark collar.  I constantly believed that anti barking collars have been inhumane.  But that was previous to 3 months of sleepless nights.  The neighbors have stopped complaining and started calling the police.  I knew that it had been time to get him a barking collar.

You’ll find so many barking collars offered that it can be dizzying at first.  When I initial knew which i necessary to train snoopy not to bark, I obtained him a citronella collar.  I imagined that this will be significantly less cruel than the other barking collars available on the market.  It might are actually humane, but it didn’t do anything at all to assist the issue.  Honestly, of all of the barking collars that I’ve tried, the citronella collar was the least useful.

The issue is, all in the other barking collars that you can get are form of sadistic.  You will discover a number of variations on barking collars, and I usually do not know all of them.  The majority of them, nonetheless, can be fit into 3 forms.  You can find the citronella collars, the electric shock collars, and the ones that make the high-pitched noises.  Of all of these, the kinds that make the high-pitched noise are a lot more successful than the other barking collars.  It seemed like such a imply factor to do to some dog, however, that it took me a although to build a single for him.  Even when I had it, it was yet another week prior to I could bring myself to place the sonic barking collar on my dog.  When I did, nevertheless, the barking easily subsided.

Advice for Optimal Aquarium Maintenance

Posted July 21st, 2010 by stucker

Aquarium maintenance is one of the most important things that any tank owner must do. Important things to keep in mind include how often you should clean your tank, basic materials needed for cleaning the tank, as well as the major parameters that you should check when cleaning the tank.

Fish aquarium supplies for aquarium maintenance

Basic supplies for cleaning up the tank include algae scrapers, right cleaning agents, bucket, algae magnets, scraping blades, and a siphon. These are useful for weekly and daily clean-ups of the tanks. You will need chemical monitors to do weekly monitoring of tank water parameters. These include pH, nitrates, and carbonate hardness. You should use the scraping blades to remove algae from the tank walls, while the cleaning agent can be used to clean gravel and plants.

When to clean your tank

Tank cleaning should be done regularly and daily checks are important. Daily aquarium maintenance includes checking your fish for signs of illness or distress, cloudiness or foam in the water, the temperature of the water, and the function of the filters and the pumps.

You also need to do weekly maintenance. This includes changing 20% of the water every two weeks to keep the water clean but not too clean. Washing the gravel is also part of this routine. This way you remove the majority of dirt and debris without stripping the tank of important bacteria. Vacuuming the gravel should also be done every time you do a water change. You can efficiently do the latter with the Python No Spill kit that helps you change the water without mess.

Final tips

To keep your tank clean for most of the week, feed your fish twice a day and vacuum the uneaten food after ten minutes. This will ensure that you lessen the amount of debris that will accumulate in the tank during that week.
