Hummingbirds are marvelous creatures. We set up hummingbird feeders just so that we may watch them. They’re like iridescent Christmas bulbs with the head and wings of a bird. Their wings can flap 80 to 100 times a second, about 10 times faster than their marble-sized hearts. The speed with which they flap their wings creates a humming sound, hence their name, the hummingbird. Let’s take a look at these fascinating birds and see why you may want to set up hummingbird feeders in your garden.

Most hummingbirds have large eyes. Some eyes are a yellow gold with wide, black pupils. The eyes of the ‘Lucifer’ hummingbird are more narrowed and sinister looking. Their beaks are like long straws, all the better to lick the nectar from goblets of colorful flowers, or from the just as colorful hummingbird feeders we hang to delight in their beauty. Hummingbird feeders are typically small bulbs that have a small hose at the base that oozes a drop of sugar water each time the hummer licks one. The sugar water usually consists of one part sugar to four parts of water. Although hummers lick nectar and sugar water like a child licks a lollipop, with pure joy, their staple isn’t nectar at all; they need the nectar primarily to fuel their wings that are adapted to pursue their prey.

When flying insects are your main fare, you need a flying insect’s speed, as well as agility, in order to fly straight up, down, or to turn sharply to the sides when the insect makes a dodge. Their upper wing bone rotates 180 degrees, giving them that amazing ability. Their double tail of feathers does the ’steering’. When they hover, they barely move. When they dart away, they describe long, elegant paths that suddenly angles, when an insect catches their eye. Some of us like to watch hummers hover as they eat from one of our hummingbird feeders; others prefer they perch so that they can see their scintillating wings. You can purchase feeders with or without perches, as you like. Most hummingbirds perch on flowers when they can. Whether they’re hovering or perching, You can’t help but be fascinated by these lovely avians, with their brilliant colors and captivating natures. Somehow they always leave you with a smile.

To enjoy them as often as possible, hang your hummingbird feeders close to your window, but be sure to put some stickers on the window so they won’t see it as a clearing and crash into it! Hummingbird feeders must be kept clean. Check the sugar solution often; it can go bad in just a couple of days. The basin shaped hummingbird feeders are easier to maintain, while the bulb types require a brush. They come in all shapes and sizes, usually created to serve as an ornament as well as a feeder. Choose one that fits the style of your house, that’s colorful, even flower shaped, attracting their natural instinct. Feeders range from as little as $12 to as much as $27, and they can be purchased at pet stores and even general stores.

If you don’t live in the Americas, you can’t use a feeder. Hummingbirds are found only in the Americas, although in past ages they may have lived elsewhere. There are some 330 species, most of the varieties living along the equator; only 16 varieties live in North America. In the western United States, the Rufus is the most abundant variety, while in the east it’s the ruby throated hummingbird you’ll see most often. Seeing them is the point to hanging hummingbird feeders outside. For one moment your world will seem like a magical fairytale.

Because it’s based on the actual costs of the vet, it keeps up with inflation. Most of the newer corporations use this technique. Pet accessories are an important part of taking care of your dog. Generally we use accessories to accentuate the beauty of things. When it comes to pet care accessories are used to protect your pet from harmful elements.  You can also gain a lot of satisfaction from buying accessories for you pet. There is a wide variety to choose from and you might wonder where to start, particularly if this is your first pet.

Here are some tips on what to look for when choosing accessories for your pet:

1. Food and water bowls:

The most important thing about choosing good bowls is that they are not easily tipped over. You will probably want to check that especially the water bowl is pretty sturdy. It’s vital that your dog has free access to water at all times and one of the ways people are doing this is by buying large water systems for their pets. Much like human watering systems these will keep your dog with fresh water for longer.

2. Dog Collar:

Whether you want a plain or fancy variety – collars are important and will be an item you use daily. This means the comfort and fit are important. Experts recommend a space between the dog’s neck and the collar to be at least 2 fingers wide. A collar should never be too loose or too tight. Make sure you get a good fit and take your dog along when you buying a collar.

3. Dog leash:

It’s not hard to choose a leash – you just want to keep in mind that it needs to be strong enough to hold your dog. Leashes are often sold clearly marked with the breeds the leash is suitable for.

4. Grooming accessories:

Depending on the kind of breed you have the amount of grooming accessories needed will vary.

If you have a dog that will need relatively little grooming, that is with a short coat, then you will need only a basic toolkit.

You will need
- dog shampoo
- dog clippers
- styptic powder
- dog toothbrush
- dog toothpaste
- dog brush or comb

These are the basics. There are many other products you can use to keep your dog clean and fragrant. If you have a more high maintenance dog you will need these plus a wider variety of brushes and combs to care for your pets coat and grooming needs.

5. Dog houses:

If your dog will be sleeping outside then it’s important that they have their own place for shelter. A dog house will keep your dog out of the harsh sunlight or rain or even snow. When choosing a dog house try to choose the right size. The dog should fit snuggly inside with enough space to move around.

6. Dog beds:

If your dog will be spending time inside it’s also a good idea to buy a dog bed. This gives your dog a ‘retreat’ and they will value having their own comfy space where they can go when cold or sleepy. Again just try to choose the right size. Many dog beds are designed for specific breeds so you won’t have a problem finding a bed for your dog.

7. Dog toys and treats:

Most dogs love playing, and just like children, love being spoilt. It is especially important if you are away for long periods of time that your dog has something to play with. It’s best to give them a variety of toys; this will keep them away from your slippers!

Again the most important thing is the size. Treats and toys should be size appropriate. If the toy is too big they won’t be able to play with it and it won’t be fun for anyone.

Any long haired dog should have it groomed every few months of more often then that.  It is a huge chore that needs to be done if you have a long haired dog.  Many people that have these dogs with long hair take their pet to the groomer however you could also do it at home with a little work.

When bath time comes you must remember to use a shampoo and also a conditioner.  You must use both because the shampoo removes the dirt and the conditioner will help stop tangles.

Tools that are also useful for dog grooming are brushes, combs and rakes.  You will need these tools to detangle your dogs hair.  By using the proper tools will help stop some huge tangles in the future.

Brudhing your dogs hair removes dust, dead skin, loose hair, and also tangles.  By brushing your dog in the spring and fall helps them shed the extra coat.  There are special brushes that your groomer will use on your dog.  The brushes that they use cover larger matted areas and they have sharper short bristles.

Drying the dogs hair is a must after they have been groomed.  You need to have a hair dryer if you are planning to groom your dog’s hair.  By drying the hair quickly prevents any mattes or tangles that can occur in wet hair.  Wet fur tangle more then dry fur.

Having a good pair of scissors will help remove the hair around the eyes and in the ears.  Some breeds get mattes around the eyes that is caused by discharge so it is a good idea to have the hair in this area short preventing this from happening.

Pets have been a big part of my life ever since I was a kid. I can’t remember there ever being a time when I didn’t have a dog, hamster, rabbit, or even a just a couple of goldfish in my family home while growing up. I became an animal lover early on, so it’s not surprising that I’m continuing this trend now that I’m an adult. The only problem is that I’m away from home quite a bit because of work. Since I can’t stand the idea of my precious pooch being neglected for 8 to 10 hours at a time, I made it a priority to find proper pet care services for him.

I used to think that pet care services were more or less limited to things related to general grooming, such as baths, haircuts, brushing, nail trimming, and things of that nature because that’s how it used to be when I was a kid. I also figured training school might be included under that label. But the pet care services industry has greatly expanded over the years, so now it’s possible to hire someone to handle every aspect of your pet’s daily upkeep.

One of the first things I had to look into was finding a reliable person to walk my dog. I know this is pretty common in large cities, but I couldn’t find anyone where I live — not even a kid from the neighborhood looking to make a few extra bucks. Fortunately, the yellow pages had a few suitable listings under pet care services, so I was able to contact a company that sends people out to walk your dog as many times a day as you’re willing to pay for. I want my four-legged companion to get as much exercise and fresh air as possible while I’m at work, since this reduces stress and cuts down on behavioral issues. So I pay for walks every three hours, which really takes a load off my mind.

In addition to daily walking, there are times when I need someone to sit for my dog while I attend an overnight or weekend conference. This is another one of those pet care services that I can’t do without. I normally board my dog at a kennel when I’ll be out of town for an extended period, but I hate to do that because it’s a very stressful experience for everyone involved. So when I heard that I could get a dog sitter to come over to provide exercise and companionship while also feeding and freshening up the water supply, I knew I’d found the perfect compromise.

I don’t mean to make it sound as though I’m foisting all of my responsibilities onto companies that provide pet care services. I make a concerted effort to do as much for my dog as possible, but since I can’t be there for him 24/7, I do need to call in some reinforcements sometimes. To me, that’s much better than the alternative, which of course is hours upon hours of neglect. If you’re in the same situation with your beloved animal, please consider hiring someone to provide pet care services when you can’t do it yourself.

My kids have been asking for a pet for a long time now, but the timing is just not right to bring a dog or cat into the house. Between full-time jobs, school, sports teams, homework, and playing with friends, there wouldn’t be enough hours in the day to devote to training, caring for, and spending time with a new puppy or kitten. Still, I do think every kid should have some kind of pet in his or her life because of the great lessons to be learned from such an experience. So we’re making a compromise and starting out with some goldfish in a simple hexagon fish tank.

Goldfish are a classic children’s pet because they are notoriously easy to care for. You don’t need a fancy aquarium with all sorts of pumps and filters in order to keep these tiny creatures happy. They’re the very definition of a low-cost, low-maintenance pet. While not as fun or as a cuddly puppy, goldfish make great starter pets for kids and shouldn’t be ruled out too quickly.

Anyway, before bringing home our new pets, we had to get a small area set up to receive them. We started by buying a hexagon fish tank, some gravel for the bottom, a net/scoop, and some food. There was no special reason that we chose a hexagon fish tank over a standard aquarium; everyone in the family just thought these looked nice and decorative compared to the traditional rectangular models. All told, we spent less than $50 on supplies and accessories, and then spent a whopping $2 on several the goldfish themselves. Seriously, what other kind of pet can claim such low start-up costs for the family? This was very easy on our budget, which is much appreciated since things are a bit tight right now.

Our new goldfish seem to be thriving in their environment. They’re very active at this point, and the kids enjoy watching them swim around in the nice hexagon fish tank they now call home. I’ve been checking out other people’s aquarium setups on the Internet, and am impressed at how great some of these tanks look. Later on I might start purchasing more accessories for our own hexagon fish tank, such as a stand, some lights, or decorations and props that can be placed in the water. I guess it all depends on how long the children can sustain interest in the whole thing. Here’s hoping this whole exercise doesn’t turn into a fad they’ll grow bored with in a couple of weeks!

Overall, I think the decision to go with goldfish as a starter pet was a good one. The price for the hexagon fish tank, food, and accessories was very reasonable, there’s hardly any maintenance to speak of, and the kids seem to enjoy having some kind of pet here at home. We can’t really ask for anything more!

Here in the United States , domesticed cats  are allowed to be declawed }. In a lot of countries around the world have outlawed this practice , because it is considered inhumane. Here in the US people take this option in order to protect their furniture. As you may know, felines have a leaning to scratch at furniture to keep their claws sharp in order to capture and eat prey . It is in their inherent aptitude since the domestication of cats.

Now when a cat is declawed, you leave it defenseless. So if it goes outside, it is vulnerable to its enemies and cannot capture prey to feed itself. Declawing is actually the removal of your cats toe.. The surgery I am sure is painful and I am sure the recovery is painful also. So what can you do to stop your cat from scratching your furniture? There are several things that can be done short of de-clawing would not be necessary:

1. You can teach your cat to scratch something else, such as a scratching post. We had a scratching post and put cat nip on it to train our cats to use the scratching post. In addition, if they messed up up and started scratching the furniture, we would shake a can which had coins in it. This would startle the cats and cause them to stop scratching our furniture. Eventually they would not do it any more

2. You can also have nail caps put on them. . This is painless and very effective.

3. Trimming of your cats claws on a regular bases will also help your furniture.

4. You can also put double-sided tape on your furniture. This helps stop scratching, too.

5. There are also resistive sprays you can purchase from pet stores .

These are some of the things you can do without having your cats declawed.  I am sure there is more, take the time to learn and implement these actions to protect your cat from unnecessary surgey.  They never had this problem before the domesticated  themselves.

Selecting the right pet for you and your family is an important decision.  There are several hundred breeds of dogs from around the world so your choices are virtually limitless.

The American Kennel Club categorized the different breeds by groups with each group having distinguishing characteristics that are shared by all the breeds in it.  The Golden Retriever is in the Sporting Group.

The Sporting Group is made up of some of the oldest and most popular breeds.  Many of the dogs in this category were bred for hunting although most people who own sporting dogs only keep them as family pets, rather than hunters.  The hunting traits, however, create some of the most enjoyable aspects of owning a sporting dog.  Goldens are natural retrievers, so you can enjoy them fetching a tennis ball for what seems like forever.  Another trait is their outgoing personality, making sporting dogs enthusiastic and responsive partners.

The Golden Retriever was bred to be tough and strong.  Don’t let the happy, silly face fool you.  While any Golden will delight in lazing around the house or wrestling on the floor with your family, the breed is particularly adept in the field.

As puppies, Goldens are full of energy and can be especially mouthy. Make sure you direct your puppy’s need to chew to appropriate chew toys. Remember, puppies aren’t fussy and don’t discriminate. A chair leg works as well for them as a sterilized bone. Goldens are very trainable, athletic, and good-natured. They have a keen desire to please. You can find them performing with tails wagging and eyes shining in the obedience, agility, and fly ball arenas. They are also excellent with children.

The Golden Retriever is generally light yellow to deep golden honey in color. The coat tends to get a little deeper in color after the first year. They tend to be about twenty-four inches tall at the withers (shoulders), with females being slightly shorter. Their coat should be long and either flat or wavy. They’ll need to be brushed properly or their coat will form thick mats

So, if you are looking for a loyal companion that will be great with kids or adults, you should definitely find a local breeder and spend some time getting to know a Golden.

You’ve doubtless heard the saying that people who have dogs as pets for a long time, actually develop facial expressions that mimic their dogs, which is why they start to resemble each other! While it makes an amusing story, there is some truth in this old saying. However, it’s the dog who’s doing the imitation, rather than the other way around.

For example, the grouchy old man’s dog may be a lay-around, a fussy and antisocial creature. Not that Rover would bite, he’s just got a disgruntled personality and kind of an Eeyore complex. There’s no fun and play in old Rover, much like his owner. A vivacious teen-aged girl, full of fun and life, has Rover’s offspring, Jingles, as her beloved pet. Both are seen bouncing around the neighborhood, playing Frisbee at the park or going for long walks through the hills, both scampering gleefully in the sun and wind.

Unlike cats, dogs are very loyal to their owners. In a way, understanding dog behavior is much like understanding kid’s behavior. Kids learn by example, and tend to pick up mannerisms and reactions similar to how they see their parents behave. Most dogs never outgrow the kid’s mentality. They don’t exercise good judgment, they’re not very sensible and they pretty much do what they can get away with doing!

Now, children have a good deal more intelligence than dogs do. Through experience and parental guidance, they gain better judgment, which is a primary goal of parenthood. Kids learn to communicate with words and the use of reason and logic. Our dog friends don’t have these advantages. Understanding dog behavior requires that you understand Rover and Jingle’s limitations. Let’s face it, your dog isn’t going to college and will never hold a job! What your dog will do is remain loyal to you, love you and misbehave whenever an enticing occasion arises.

Understanding dog behavior and misbehavior means that you understand that your beloved pet will remain a lifelong pre-adolescent. If Rover has an opportunity to run off with a roast beef, left tantalizingly on the kitchen counter, he’ll do it now, and ten years from now. He’ll never outgrow the urge to chase a Frisbee until his tongue is hanging down by his feet. Your kids and grandkids will be able to stick peanut butter on Rover’s nose forever, with the exact same result. Rover and Jingles love every minute of such silliness. They’ll be running over hill and dale, long after your kids have grown up and left the nest.

Understanding dog behavior involves a certain amount of slacking. Dogs are pirates and, so even though they know what you disapprove of, they will go for it. You’ve got to discipline your dog. A well inflected “Baaad dog!”, helps curb their natural inclinations. Once you understand dog behavior and the natural limitations, you just learn to live with the down side! Use a gentle and forgiving hand when training your dog. Your dog is going to love you forever, no matter what.

Think about your relationship with your dog. Does he or she reflect your personality? Does your dog friend behave like Tigger or Eeyore? It’s really all up to you. You’re the leader in understanding dog behavior. Put a smile on your face when he steals a cube of butter. A “Baaad dog!” is still in order.

Ten years from now, your neighbors may notice that you and Rover, or Jingles, resemble one another, in happiness.
