The American Foxhound is a very old breed – older than America, the country it was named after. The American Foxhound breedhave evolved from the hunting dogs brought by Robert Brooke to the Crown Colony in 1650.

These excellent hunting dogs were highly valued in their country of origin. These dogs are favorite hunting companions of the British landed gentry. In a fox hunt, hunters on horseback follow packs of American Foxhounds. The deep and booming melodious voice will distinctly change to alert the hunters when a prey is found. The dogs are used by the settlers of the Crown colony to hunt foxes as well. Because of the ferocious nature, the dogs are believed to have been used by the English military commanders to track Indians.

The crossing between English Hounds and the dogs of Irish and French settlers resulted to the development of a new breed – the American Foxhound. This has resulted to the development of the American Foxhound.
