Owners are always advised by dogs experts to use pet foods to ensure the health of the dog. This means that pet parents should avoid giving the dog people foods to avoid poisoning. No dog owner in his right mind would provide the pet poisonous food. Unfortunately, many dogs get poisoned because owners are not aware that some common people foods are toxic to dogs.

Dogs have huge appetites and they are also omnivorous thus anything will be eaten. Not many dogs love fruits but owners would entice the pet to eat because fruits are healthy foods. Fruits are loaded with vitamins that will enhance the immune system of the dog and also strengthen the intestinal muscles for easier waste elimination. However, grapes and avocados are toxic to dogs. An unknown substance in grapes and raisins is toxic to dogs as it can cause severe kidney damage. Dogs must be prevented from eating not only the avocado fruit but also the bark, leaves and pit as the avocado plant contains a toxic substance that causes fluid to accumulate in the dogs abdomen chest and heart.

Dogs must not be allowed to consume chocolate, coffee and tea because Theobromine in chocolate and caffeine in tea and coffee are naturally occurring substances that stimulates the nervous system and the heart. Dogs are not only affectionate but also entertaining companions as they can be trained to do tricks. A dog that would put on a show by drinking beer and other alcoholic beverages from the can would be very entertaining but owners have to realize that they are putting the life of the pet in danger by teaching this trick. Ethanol, the chemical compound in alcoholic beverages is what causes the toxic effect in dogs. Once the dog drinks any alcoholic beverage, the ethanol will be readily absorbed by the body and affect the central nervous and respiratory system. Dogs that have ingested enough amounts of alcohol have to have immediate medical attention as inducing vomiting will not be helpful.

Onions cannot be tolerated by the dogs system. This human food has thiosulfate that destroys the dogs red blood cells. As this substance is not destroyed by cooking dog owners has to be make sure that foods with onions are not given to dogs. A large dose or small but regular doses of onions can cause the death of the dog.

Foods that are safe for humans may have harmful effects on the dog. Dogs have different metabolism thus foods that are perfectly safe for humans can have poisonous effects when consumed.
