Having birds as pets, you must have a good decision before you take on a new companion. Before making a choice, you need to have at least the basic knowledge that might help you save lots of headaches. It doesn’t have to be that difficult having a bird as a pet.

There are birds that fun to watch like finches. Birds that can sing include canaries. Birds which are presentable like cockatiels and lovebirds. And birds that talk like parrots and mynah birds.

Some traits can cross over. For example, male cockatiels may learn to talk and whistle. In fact, I once have a friend who had one that loved to ask, “Where’s my baby?” and whistle the tune of the Andy Griffith theme.

If you like smaller birds, try getting finches, lovebirds or parakeets. If you’re for larger birds, having a parrot, macaw or cockatoo will make a good choice.

When you’re on a budget, getting a Budgie is a great choice. Once you spend time with them, they are affectionate. They will make great pets for your kids also.

Want an exotic pet, and then get a Parrot. They can learn easily to talk and perform tricks. Once you earn their trust, these colored birds can also be affectionate.

Not all birds can be good pets. Wild birds don’t adapt well and get along with humans that easy. The bigger the bird, the bigger the mess. They usually find their food anywhere. And to reduce the mess, there are supplies that can help you. There’s no hurry in getting the right bird for a pet. These birds have different personalities.

It’s cute to have a pet bird but you must be prepared on what you’re getting into. Understand that there’s responsibility involved. Whichever bird you get, you must provide it with the proper care and attention. That way, you and your pet with come along for decades.

The Bond that can come between a person and a dog can be extremely strong, especially if that bond had been strengthened living with each other for many years, I have personally cried after loosing our family dog that had been like a best friend to me from my birth till I as 15 years old, when he was hit by a car one morning.

Dogs serve many different needs for people. Some people get a dog because they are lonely and need a loyal friend or because they want a dog to protect the home. A dog that is taken good care of and given attention to regularly will give his life to help protect his home and his owner. For the blind a dog can be a pair of eyes to help them get around and for the police a dog can be an important tool and a loyal partner, with a nose that nothing can beat.

The first thing you need to know about taking care of a dog is that dogs need lots of exercise. This is the same for large dogs and small dogs. All dogs need to be let out at least once every 8 hours and should given at least a 20 minute walk to give the dog some fresh air, exercise and a chance to relieve themselves.

It is also important to play with the dog on a regular basis. This can mean going to the park on a weekend or day off and having a good game of fetch, tossing the ball around in your back yard or just wrestling on the ground with the dog, just make sure if you are ruff housing with a little dog that you donĂ‚’t accidentally hurt the dog. Playing with the dog for a half hour a day, is not only good for the dogs physical health but a dig that is played with regularly is mentally healthier and less likely to become a depressed dog, it also lowers your blood pressure as well and it will form an unbreakable bond between you and your pooch, which will extend to your family if you should start having one after having the dog.

What you feed your dog is very important to the dogs continued good health. The better dog foods will be marked for what are groups the food is appropriate for. Younger dogs need certain vitamins and minerals in larger amounts then an adult dog, and the same goes for an elderly dog they need more calcium in their food to help protect their bones and joints. Feeding your dog the wrong food can stunt the dog’s growth and opens the dog to a larger risk of surgery when they are older.

Just like a person a dog should be taken to the veterinarian’s office every 6 months, and must receive their shots every year. Regular checkups and vaccinations will also help assure that your dog grows to be an old happy dog.

As soon as the puppy receives a clearance from the vet socialization must be started. Start by regularly grooming your dog so that it can get used to being touched. By grooming the dog it will get used to being handled so that it will not be aggressive if petted by unfamiliar people.

Let the pet mingle with other dogs by taking the dog to the local dog park or enrolling the pet to an obedience class. Introduction to people and animals as well as exposure to varied situations will socialize the dog. If possible always take the dog with you. The dog’s favorite treats will be positive reinforcements that will entice the dog to interact with people and other animals. The socialization efforts will be all worth it as the dog will grow into a well adjusted and well mannered pet.

Dog owners know that the pet vomits occasionally. The dog’s vomiting can be due to a variety of reasons. Similar to humans, dogs vomit if they have eaten something that does not agree with their system. Dogs commonly suffer from upset stomach given the fact that these indiscriminate eaters would not pass up the chance to eat inedible objects and spoiled foods.

Nature though has provided our four legged friends with an effective way of purging unwanted food and foreign objects from the stomach. A dog simply needs to eat grass and after a while the bile and the unwanted contents of the stomach such pieces of plastic, cloth, stones or pieces of wood will be chucked out by the pet. A vomiting bout will occur if the dog has consumed considerable amount of food and has drank a lot of water too quickly. A dog will vomit if a new dog food is introduced. Not many dog owners are aware that stress can make a dog vomit.

Being introduced to a home with other pets will be stressful to the new dog . The situation becomes highly stressful if the nervous or shy newcomer is introduced to a large and dominant old pet. An owner has to deal with the inconvenience for a while but as soon as the dog has adapted to its new environment the stress induced vomiting will be gone. The dog will be its normal self after vomiting. Owners of healthy dogs with normal energy levels and good appetite need not be too concerned with the pet’s vomiting. Occasional vomiting bouts can be managed at home. To prevent the dog from vomiting repeatedly, food must not be given for 24 hours.

However, a dog’s vomiting may not be due to dietary indiscretion. Vomiting is not considered a disease in itself but an indication of an underlying illness. A pet parent should be vigilant and carefully observe the condition of the vomiting dog.

A dog owner has to act at once if the repeated vomiting is accompanied with diarrhea, fever and the dog is noticed to be lethargic. The vomiting of the dog may be caused by a poisonous substance that was ingested by the pet. Vomiting can be due to parasites infestation or infectious diseases such as parvovirus. A dog with bloody vomit may be suffering from intestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, kidney problems and stomach ulcer. A do that has been vomiting for 24 hours must be taken to a veterinary facility at once as proper management is necessary to save the life of the pet.

Dogs are formidable predators as the capability of the teeth and the jaws to deliver up to 450 pound pressure can create serious injuries. When the strong jaws of the dog have locked on its victim, the needle sharp teeth can literally tear the flesh away. Depending on the body part bitten, the dog bite can cause lifelong injuries that will limit the victim’s mobility. A serious dog bite can even kill a person. The dog’s strong teeth will deliver deep puncture wound that would “inject” bacteria resulting to infections and the development of viral diseases. A potential life threatening outcome of dog bites is rabies.

It would be very hard to prevent dog bites because dogs are the most common animal companions of man. Dog bites that are most common in children are often caused by the family’s own dog. What do you do to treat a dog bite?

First aid must be administered on dog bite wounds to prevent infection but treatment must not be started until the dog is removed to prevent further attacks. Dog bites can create two types of wounds – deep puncture wounds and lacerations. Infection commonly occurs in deep puncture wounds as the teeth inject bacteria to the wound. Lacerations occur when the dog’s teeth tear away the skin.

Puncture wounds that are not heavy bleeders must be allowed to bleed so that the bacteria will be cleansed from the wound. Heavy bleeding is common in dog bites that have created skin lacerations. Bleeding has to be stemmed by applying direct pressure on the wound. To prevent infection, wounds resulting from dog bites must be thoroughly cleaned.

Dog bites can cause skin lacerations that need to be sutured but before taking the victim to a medical facility the bite wound must be cleaned thoroughly as bacteria allowed to stay inside the skin for several hours will have an opportunity to cause infection. Washing the wound with antibacterial soap for about five minutes will lessen the risk of infection. Before covering the bite wound with sterile gauze, apply a generous amount of antibiotic ointment. As expected, a person with dog bite wounds would be in pain. By applying ice compress, the swelling that causes most of the pain will be reduced.

Dog bite victims will always be concerned with rabies more so if the dog’s immunization status is not verified. A person bitten by a stray dog must have to undergo a series of injections that constitute rabies therapy .

The dog’s failure to verbalize what they want and what they feel has not become a hindrance to the formation of close ties between humans and dogs as both can understand each other. How can dogs impart what they want to say? Dogs are intelligent animals and using body language and some forms of vocalizations, dogs can very well communicate with other dogs, with other animals and with humans. Dog owners would attest to the fact that man’s best friend really do have the ability to show their feelings and to convey what they mean to their human friends.

Being pack animals, it would be an inherent attitude of dogs to dominate other dogs thus in a two or three dog household, one would be the leader of the pack. Dogs have a distinctive method of communicating with each other. Similar to wolves in the wild, the dominant dog that takes the position of the alpha male can restore order in the pack when the pack members are being unruly. All the alpha male has to do is to assume an intimidating position, bare the teeth and growl and dogs lower in rank will show signs of being submissive by lowering the eyes and holding the tail between the legs.

The bared teeth and the threatening growl of the pack leader will be enough to warn other dogs in the pack. Dogs have another form of communication – the butt sniffing ritual. When a dog meets another dog, the butt sniffing ritual is used as a form of communication that allows a dog to accept or to reject the other.

Through the long years of association, man has finally understood the sounds as well as the body movement of dogs so that even if these animals were not gifted with the ability to speak they can still communicate with their human friend. Its true, dogs and humans have different ways of communicating but a patient and discerning pet owner will understand what the pet needs and what the pet want to convey simply by understanding the body movements as well as the facial expression of the dog. A dog that is alerting the owners to possible territory intrusion would bark in a different manner than when it barks with joy at the sight of the master.

Dogs are man’s best friend and loyal companions. It would be super if dogs can talk so that they will be the master’s confidante as well but since they cannot, we humans have to be satisfied with the silent empathy and unending affection of the pet.

Dog owners would know that apart from being good eaters, dogs have the unaccountable inclination to eat repulsive things. Dog experts call this habit of ingesting non-edible things as pica. Eating non-edible items is a normal behavior of dogs but dog owners would still be puzzled by this behavior more so if the pet is provided with enough food. One of the non-edible things that dogs love to eat are rocks.

Puppies are more inclined to eat rocks. Puppies are naturally inquisitive and one way of discovering their world is by using their mouth. The hard rock will be chewed by the pup as if it were a fruity bubble gum. This habit of eating rocks though can have dangerous repercussion on the health of the pet. Chewing rocks is really dangerous as even if the rock is not swallowed it can still injure the soft tissues of the mouth. Moreover this object is not meant for the dog’s delicate digestive tract as ingestion can result to diarrhea. What would be more alarming is the fact that a rather large rock ingested by the dog can be life threatening if an esophagus or an intestinal tract blockage is created.

We know that dogs are voracious eaters. We also know that man’s best friends can develop hazardous and socially unacceptable behaviors. Dog owners will still be perplexed by the dog’s craving for rocks. The habit of eating rocks can signify that the pet has a medical problem such as brain diseases. If an underlying medical concern was ruled out, the rock eating habit of the pet can be attributed to behavioral problems.

The dog’s propensity to eat rocks can be caused by boredom, anxiety or stress. Dogs are social animals thus they would crave social interactions with dogs and with humans. Boredom will set in if the dog is left alone at home all day. Boredom is one of the reasons why dogs develop unacceptable behavior. Eating rocks is a sign that the dog is bored. This behavior can also be the dog’s way of getting the owner’s attention.

For proper diagnosis, humans have to have a series of laboratory tests. Dogs don’t need any of these test as these animals can recognize what is wrong with their system. Rock eating can be the dog’s way of correcting an undiagnosed nutrient deficiency. The habit of eating rocks can be the dog’s way of calling the master’s attention to the nutrient deficient diet or to the attention that is being missed by the dog.

It is possible to train a ferret to use a litter box. Training a ferret is not easy but there are benefits to the owner. The cage will be cleaner. The play area for the pet will also be kept cleaner.

It will take time to teach ferrets, which are sometimes spelled farrets by accident, to use a box for their waste. It will not be accomplished overnight. Being impatience will hamper the process. The success rate depends a lot of the ferret as well. All pets have a different personality and abilities.

Initially a box is placed the cage of the ferret. It is to be put in a spot where the ferret likes to relief itself most often. Starting in this manner will help the process be successful. The ferret should use the box consistently before the next step is taken.

The next steps in training involve placing a box on the outside of the ferret cage. The pet can start out having a small play area. The owner must pay close attention to the actions of the pet for these next steps. A pet generally will make a backing up motion when they are going to excrete waste. This is when the owner needs pick them up and put them in the box. The animal needs to be awarded when they use the box in the correct manner. The reward can be kind words and a small treat.

A pet should not be given punitive treatment for mistakes. Punishment will badly affect learning. A pet who has an accident should be gently placed in the box soon after it happens. This is a reminder of where they should relieve themselves.

With the proper training the pet will have more and more success. Their roaming and play area can be enlarged as they learn to use the litter box. Larger areas may require more than one box be placed in it. This will help the animal be able to get to a proper place.

An owner who watches the cues of the pet will do well. The whole thing will work the best if the boxes are placed in the areas that the ferret prefers. These animals have an opinion and it will be a struggle to go against it.

The box requires consistent cleaning. It should not be completely cleaned of waste. A little waste should be left so the animal can smell that this is where they need to go to relieve themselves. A ferret is basically a clean animal and will not want to make a mess of this type just anywhere in or out of the cage. They will especially not want to go in a totally clean cage. A small amount of waste should be left in the cage for the same reason.

Patience is key in training a ferret. It takes great care as well but with that care a ferret can be trained to use a litter container. Similar to other animals, if the pet has accidents down the road the teaching may need to start back at the beginning.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you can have the attention of all the gorgeous bikini clad ladies in the beach because your dog retrieves the Frisbee every time you say the word “fetch”? A dog that can fetch will be a joy to play with. Puppies though are not obtained from the breeder already trained to fetch. Retrievers are renowned for being an outstanding breed used by hunters to get the game after the shot but these dogs would still have to be trained to fetch.

Fetch is a simple obedience command that can be easily learned by the dog. The dog will probably view the obedience lessons as game because these animals are very playful. To train the dog to fetch, an owner can take advantage of the dog’s inherent behavior of pleasing its people. Dogs are food motivated thus favorite treats can be used as positive reinforcement to make the training easier.

Start the training by playing with the dog. Get the dog’s attention by playing with the toy that will be used in the training. Gain the interest of the dog by playing with the ball. The dog will surely be enticed to play because dogs are naturally playful. Toss the ball a few feet away and give the fetch command. At the start of the training, the dog will not return the ball to you although it may run after the ball and play with it for a while. Praise the dog and toss the ball again. This process must be repeated until the dog has learned to get and return the ball to you. Every time the dog obeys praise and reward the pet with a treat.

The reward will entice the dog to obey as it will be associated by the dog to the fetch command. To test the dog, give the fetch command and toss the ball farther. Although the dog will run after the ball, it is possible that the dog will not return the toy to you. Do not reward the dog with the treat. The dog has to understand that a treat will only be received if he returns the ball to you.

Another way of teaching the dog to fetch is to use a toy with an opening where a treat can be placed. Just make sure that the dog cannot get the treat inside the toy. If the pet can remove and consume the treat, it will not be inclined to return the toy to you. The dog has to learn that if the baited toy is not returned to the owner, no reward will be received.
